A Universal Archive: William Kentridge as Printmaker includes over 100 prints made between 1988 and the present day. William Kentridge’s distinctive use of shadow and silhouettes, his concern with memory and perspective, and his keen interest in literary texts, are all strongly in evidence throughout this book, which provides new insights into the working methods of this prolific artist.

Internationally acclaimed for his drawings, films, theatre and opera productions, Kentridge is also an innovative and prolific printmaker; over the past 25 years, he has produced more than 300 prints – including etchings, engravings, aquatints, silkscreens, linocuts and lithographs – often experimenting with unusual formats and printing techniques to create highly-worked, intensely atmospheric imagery.

Featuring an original essay by Rosalind Krauss, and an interview with the artist by writer and printmaker Kate McCrickard, this beautifully produced volume also includes a series of previously unpublished works, along with some of Kentridge’s most highly regarded early prints.
